WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN YEAR 5-6

Spring Art

Last week the Grade 5/6 class painted cherry blossom trees. They used a light pink for the flowers and a darkish brown for the tree trunk. All of the paintings look really cool and they all stand out really well.

Cherry blossom trees are a species of tree with over 600 different types of cherry trees that are spread worldwide but they originated in Eastern Asia.

Science

This term we have been doing lots of SCIENCE! In science we have been doing lots and lots of experiments about solids, liquids and gases. For one experiment we made rock candy!!! In this experiment we were in 8 groups. We dipped a stick in hot water, then we dipped it in sugar, (some did white some did raw) then we put the stick in a water sugar mix that had some food colouring in it. Each cup had a different ratio - that means e.g. 3 cups sugar, 1 cup water. Then we waited a week for the rock candy to set. After a long week, the rock candy was ready! The different sugars acted very differently, the white sugar made very little candy but the raw made awesome crystals!

After we did the rock candy, we made some corn-starch mud. Corn-starch mud is a sort of mud that is made when you mix water with corn-starchflour, then you stir it together until it looks like a sort of mud.

The amazing thing about corn-starch mud is that it’s a liquid, so it flows kind of like a liquid, but it is also a solid because when you hit it fast and hard it becomes a solid. This is called a sheer thickening liquid.

Thanks for reading – The Grade 5/6 class!
