GRADE 4-5 WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL EXCURSION
On Thursday 26th July, our Grade 4/5 class travelled to Moonah sports stadium to participate in wheelchair basketball.
Our students had a lot of fun participating in the warm-up activities and the wheelchair basketball games. In class discussions prior to going on the excursion many of the 4/5 students thought it would be really easy but on the day found manoeuvring around in the games, dribbling the ball, passing and shooting quite challenging!
The session was run in collaboration with Richard from Para Quad Tasmania and we thank him for this amazing opportunity for our students!
To finish the session, Richard spoke to us about disabilities and how we should treat people who live with a disability.
Thank you to Mrs Barber and Mr Jelkic for accompanying our Grade 4/5 class and also competing against them - at the end we had an adult vs student game. You will have to chat with one of our 4/5 students to hear about how it went!
Here are some comments from our students:
- Lola – Zooming around in the wheelchair was fun. A message from Richard was to never question someone in a wheelchair.
- Grace – I had found in the wheelchair stealing the ball and shooting okay. I learnt that it is not nice to go up to random people in a wheelchair and ask them how they got in their wheelchair. The first thing you should say is, Hi how are you. And don’t judge people in wheelchairs because they are normal people too.
- Silas – It was a cool experience to ride in a wheelchair. It was a bit challenging because it wasn’t like basketball at school, it was sitting and shooting not standing and shooting so it was harder to shoot the ball.
- Lacie – I had fun learning how to use a wheelchair. It was fun. My Dad also got a go. A message Richard shared was to be careful what you post on the internet.
