ORIENTEERING TASMANIA COACH VISIT & YEAR 3/4 ORIENTEERING EXCURSION

Rest assured if you ever get lost at Molesworth Primary our students will be able point you in the right direction!

We have been focusing on Orienteering this term and were visited by Mike from Orienteering Tasmania earlier this week. We discussed and explored what Orienteering is, navigational skills using a map, navigating on a vast range of terrain whilst moving at speed and reaching checkpoints!

We participated in some orienteering races, discussed directions and navigation, orienteering symbols and pictures, used maps to navigate ourselves to get to checkpoints around our school and we also used electronic orienteering equipment!

Yesterday the Grade 3/4 class went to Tolosa Park to complete various orienteering courses! We had to navigate around a new location and use our Orienteering skills to locate checkpoints. Mike was really impressed because each team had perfect runs – not missing any controls. Each team was accompanied by a wonderful parent volunteer and without the following parent volunteers we wouldn’t have been able to go on our excursion – a MASSIVE thank you to, Mrs Farrell, Mr Cross, Ms Johns, Mr Turner, Mrs Watt, Mr Littlejohn and Ms Burns!

We would like to pass on a big thank you to Jane and Mike from Orienteering Tasmania for organising these special events for us.

Hear below from our 3/4 Orienteering stars:

  • Emily – It was really good, I liked moving around finding the controls.
  • Ava – it was really fun, especially going down the big hill! We went really fast.
  • Beatrix – I really liked the fact we didn’t know where we were going and had to use a map. It was a lot more challenging. It was good that my group communicated with others to make a plan of where to go.
  • Levi – my favourite part was getting exercise in whilst we were orienteering.
  • Isla – I really liked it. The controls were placed really well. I liked on the maps it told you where the controls were. I liked communicating with my team to find the controls.
  • Manu – I liked when we used the electronic p-cards to scan each control.

If you are interested, check out the Orienteering Tasmania website (https://www.tasorienteering.asn.au/) for details of future events. The next one is at Waverley Park this Sunday July 6th at 10:00am, all members of the Molesworth Primary School community are very welcome and your first event is free. Just turn up and Mike will lend you the equipment you need to participate. For any queries please contact Mike (learntoorienteer@tasorienteering.asn.au).
