PREP/1 SCIENCE WEEK 2025: TRACKING TASSIE WILDLIFE!

As part of Science Week 2025, our curious Prep-One scientists explored the fascinating world of animal tracks and scat to learn how we can uncover secrets about local wildlife.

At our very own Molesworth Environment Centre, students investigated how different footprints and droppings can reveal an animal’s diet, habitat, and behaviours. We focused on how native Tasmanian animals move through various environments for different purposes. To bring this to life, students used their own feet or animal figurines to mimic the movement of a local animal, stepping across mock habitats to understand how animals leave clues behind.

Then, we headed outside to become real wildlife detectives—searching for signs of animal poo! Students examined different types of scat, piecing together stories about what the animals had eaten and where they had been. It was a hands-on, nose-wrinkling adventure that sparked plenty of laughter and learning! Our favourite scat of the day belonged to the Tasmanian Devil!

Science Week was a brilliant opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and discover just how much you can learn from the things animals leave behind.
