SIZZLING STARTS BY 2-3 JACOBSON
‘One day….On the weekend….Once upon a time…’ are just a few of the common sentence starters 2-3’s noticed that we use to begin our writing. Although, there is nothing wrong with any of these beginnings, students agreed these sentence starters didn’t hook or engage the reader and well frankly, were just plain old boring.
As writers and authors, 2-3’s have set out to ‘ban the boring’ by using creative ways to capture an audience. We have been identifying different writing techniques to help start our stories in a powerful, interesting, exciting, funny or unusual way.
We have been learning to use:
Read some of our sizzling starts based on ‘a dance’:
- Do, do, da, dee, went the music. – Otis & Sonny H
- Tap, tap, tap went the tap dancing shoes on the concrete stage. – Peppa & Grace
- Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh went the ballerina dancers spinning really fast. - Kobi & Nick
- At the start of the lyrical, I was nervous but that didn’t stop me from what I loved. - Silas & Milly
- I leapt out of my bed and ran to the car and Mum drove me to the humungous dance floor. -Henry, Lacie & Olive
- Tappity tap went the tap dances. – Finn & Archie
- The killer wasp gracefully flapped his miniature wings with talent as he danced with a millipede. – Emillia & Sonny F
- The ballerina came out of nowhere and leapt onto the stage while the crowd goes wild. She spins and twirls around on her tippy toes. - Toby, Darcy, Hugh & Chelsea
- A dancer spins on their head fast until dizziness occurred, making them flip onto the concrete colliding with the hard floor. - Harry, Angel, Hailey & Divinia
- “I don’t want to go to the dance floor Mum, please!” – Olive, Henry & Lacie
- Have you ever danced in front of 1000 people? Well I have with 100 dogs doing ballet. - Peppa & Grace
- I moved my hands from my head to my hips performing the macarena on the enormous stage. - Nick & Kobi
- The curtains opened as a mysterious looking person started to move their arms like a jellyfish. - Milly & Silas
- Have you ever beatboxed in your life? Asked my brother Jack. - Henry, Lacie & Olive
