INTERSCHOOL CHESS
On Tuesday the 20th of June, 7 students from Molesworth participated in the Interschool Chess Tournament, held at Austin’s Ferry Primary. The students were Ellis, Nick, Darcy C, Timana, Maia, Sebastian, and Thomas.
The tournament had two divisions, primary and high school, with about 80 students from across 8 schools competing in the primary division.
The schedule was intense, with each students playing a total of 7 games throughout the day. After each round, the student’s scores were adjusted, and they were continuously matched against students of the same ability (The Swiss mode of tournament play!).
Molesworth finished in sixth place, which is a great achievement considering it was the first time the school had entered the competition, and that we had the smallest number of students in our team. Our team also had the youngest competitors, 2 students from prep. Molesworth’s stand out chess player was Darcy Cross who really shone on the day, winning 5 of his 7 games!
All students did Molesworth proud with their sportsmanship, polite behaviour, and maturity. However, the most impressive feature of the day was how united the Molesworth team was and the support and encouragement they showed their teammates.
